First-Year Angus Young Signature SG
Gibson introduced the Angus Young Signature SG in 2000, making this guitar a desirable first-year example of the model.
Rather than simply putting Angus Young’s name on a standard SG, Gibson incorporated several specifications that distinguish the signature model from a conventional SG.
The exceptionally slim neck, signature bridge pickup, ’57 Classic neck pickup, ABR-1 bridge, and distinctive Maestro Vibrola were all chosen to create an SG with the fast response, powerful rock tone, and unmistakable appearance associated with Angus.
The result is one of Gibson’s most recognizable artist signature models and an obvious choice for an AC/DC fan, but it’s also an excellent SG in its own right.
Angus Young Slim Neck
One of the defining features of this model is its exceptionally comfortable Angus Young Slim-Taper neck profile.
Our measurements on this particular guitar are:
- Nut Width: 1.65"
- 1st Fret Depth: .78"
- 12th Fret Depth: .87"
At only .78" at the 1st fret, this is a genuinely slim Gibson neck.
It remains relatively slender as you move toward the upper register, measuring just .87" at the 12th fret.
Combined with the SG’s excellent upper-fret access, 24.75" scale length, and smooth rosewood fingerboard, the result is an extremely fast and comfortable guitar that feels purpose-built for energetic rhythm work and lead playing.
Angus Young Signature + ’57 Classic Pickups
The guitar features a carefully selected pair of Gibson humbuckers.
In the bridge is the Angus Young Signature humbucker, designed to provide the aggressive attack, clarity, and output needed for the hard-driving rhythm and lead tones associated with Angus.
The neck position is equipped with a Gibson ’57 Classic, providing a warmer, smoother PAF-inspired voice that complements the hotter bridge pickup beautifully.
Together, the two pickups give the guitar considerably more versatility than its AC/DC association might initially suggest.
The bridge position is tight, articulate, and aggressive with plenty of bite, while the neck pickup provides warm cleans, thick rhythm sounds, and smooth lead tones.
Maestro Vibrola with Engraved Angus Cover
One of the most distinctive visual features of the Angus Young Signature SG is its Maestro Vibrola.
The long Vibrola assembly gives the guitar a classic vintage SG appearance, while the specially engraved “Angus” cover immediately identifies it as the signature model.
Beyond its visual appeal, the Maestro provides smooth, subtle pitch movement and adds another dimension to the guitar compared with the traditional stopbar-equipped SG.
Paired with the ABR-1 bridge, it creates a classic Gibson setup with unmistakable vintage styling.
Aged Cherry Finish
Few finishes suit an SG better than Aged Cherry.
The deep red finish emphasizes the contours and beveling of the mahogany body while giving the guitar the unmistakable appearance associated with countless classic SGs.
On this example, the naturally aged nickel hardware has developed some tarnishing over the years, adding a subtle vintage character that works particularly well with the Aged Cherry finish.
The guitar remains exceptionally clean overall, with only light scratches and a few small dings from normal use.
For an instrument from 2000, it has been very well cared for.
Tone & Feel
This guitar delivers exactly what you want from a great SG: fast response, strong midrange, excellent upper-fret access, and plenty of bite.
The lightweight mahogany construction gives the guitar a lively, resonant feel, while the bridge Angus Young humbucker delivers the articulate crunch and aggressive attack that works beautifully through an overdriven tube amplifier.
Switching to the ’57 Classic neck pickup brings out a warmer and rounder side of the instrument, making the guitar equally capable of blues, classic rock, and smoother lead tones.
At only 7 lbs 6 oz, the guitar is also comfortably lightweight and feels lively in the hands.
The exceptionally slim .78" first-fret neck depth makes this an especially appealing SG for players who prefer thinner Gibson neck profiles.
Most importantly, the guitar has been professionally set up and plays fantastic.
Original Hard-Shell Case + Paperwork
This guitar comes complete with its original Gibson hard-shell case and paperwork.
Having the original case and accompanying paperwork is particularly nice on an early signature model like this and helps make the package more complete for both players and collectors.
The case provides excellent protection for storage, transportation, and shipping.
