For Sale: 2023 Fender Japan MIJ FSR Traditional II ’60s Jazzmaster – 3-Tone Sunburst | Ishibashi Original Order | AV ’65 Pickups | HSC

Up for sale is a 2023 Fender Made in Japan FSR Traditional II ’60s Jazzmaster in classic 3-Tone Sunburst, complete with a non-original hard-shell case.

This is not your typical Fender Japan Traditional II Jazzmaster. It was produced as an Ishibashi Original Order Factory Special Run (FSR) with a killer combination of vintage-inspired 1959 Jazzmaster styling and upgraded, player-friendly specifications.

The 3-Tone Sunburst alder body, gold anodized aluminum pickguard, and slab rosewood fingerboard give this guitar an unmistakable late-’50s Jazzmaster appearance. Under the hood, a pair of USA-made Fender American Vintage ’65 Jazzmaster pickups provides authentic vintage-style tone, while the 9.5" radius, Narrow Tall frets, and Mustang-style saddles make it more comfortable and practical for modern players.

It’s a fantastic Fender Japan special run and a great choice for anyone who loves the look of an early Jazzmaster but wants some thoughtful modern refinements.

Ishibashi Original Order Factory Special Run

What makes this Jazzmaster especially interesting is its Ishibashi Original Order FSR specification.

Rather than simply changing the finish of a standard Traditional II model, this special run combines several desirable appointments to create a Jazzmaster heavily inspired by the look of the original 1959-era instruments.

The centerpiece is the classic 3-Tone Sunburst finish paired with a gold anodized aluminum pickguard. It’s one of the most recognizable early Jazzmaster combinations and gives this guitar considerably more vintage character than the typical modern production model.

The slab rosewood fingerboard further complements the vintage-inspired aesthetic, while the 9.5" radius and Narrow Tall frets provide a noticeably more forgiving playing experience than a strictly vintage-spec Jazzmaster.

It’s a very cool combination of old-school Fender styling and modern playability.

USA Fender American Vintage ’65 Pickups

Another major highlight is the factory-installed pair of Fender American Vintage ’65 Jazzmaster single-coil pickups.

These premium USA pickups are voiced to capture the open, articulate character associated with vintage mid-’60s Jazzmasters.

They provide plenty of crisp attack and definition while retaining the warm, woody character that makes a good Jazzmaster so distinctive. Chords remain clear and complex, and individual notes have plenty of sparkle without becoming overly harsh.

From surf and garage rock to indie, alternative, shoegaze, jazz, blues, and classic rock, these pickups give the guitar an extremely versatile vintage-inspired voice.

Gold Anodized Aluminum Pickguard

The gold anodized aluminum pickguard is one of the defining visual features of this FSR.

Gold guards are closely associated with some of the earliest Jazzmasters and look fantastic against the 3-Tone Sunburst finish.

Beyond giving the guitar its unmistakable late-’50s appearance, the combination of gold anodized aluminum, Sunburst, and dark slab rosewood creates a much more distinctive look than a standard production Traditional II Jazzmaster.

If you love the appearance of the earliest Jazzmasters, this one absolutely nails the vibe.

Electronics & Features

This FSR retains the full traditional Jazzmaster electronics layout.

The lead circuit provides Master Volume and Master Tone controls along with the familiar 3-way pickup selector.

The separate rhythm circuit utilizes the neck pickup with dedicated thumbwheel volume and tone controls, providing a darker and warmer alternative to the brighter lead circuit.

This dual-circuit design is a huge part of what makes a Jazzmaster unique and provides a surprisingly broad range of tones.

The guitar also retains the classic floating Jazzmaster tremolo system, providing the smooth and expressive vibrato response that has become synonymous with the model.

Mustang-Style Saddles

One particularly useful player-oriented feature is the use of Mustang-style bridge saddles.

Traditional threaded Jazzmaster saddles can sometimes allow strings to shift during aggressive playing. The Mustang-style design provides a more secure string path while retaining the feel and functionality of the traditional floating Jazzmaster bridge and tremolo system.

It’s a subtle upgrade, but one that many Jazzmaster players specifically seek out.

Tone & Feel

This guitar combines the feel of a traditional Jazzmaster with several specifications that make it exceptionally comfortable to play.

The U-shaped maple neck measures .87" at the 1st fret and .91" at the 12th fret, giving it a comfortable, substantial feel without becoming overly chunky.

The 9.5" radius and Narrow Tall frets make bends and lead work easier than on a traditional 7.25"-radius vintage reissue while still retaining the familiar Fender feel.

The slab rosewood fingerboard adds to the classic aesthetic and feels great under the fingers.

At only 7 lbs 10 oz, this is also a nicely weighted Jazzmaster that feels balanced and comfortable whether sitting or standing.

Most importantly, it plays and sounds fantastic.

Upgraded Hard-Shell Case

This guitar includes a non-original hard-shell case, a significant upgrade over the gig bag that Fender Japan Jazzmasters of this type were typically supplied with.

The hard-shell case provides substantially better protection for storage, transportation, and shipping than a gig bag. Its rigid construction gives the instrument an additional layer of protection from impacts and handling while in transit and allows us to pack the guitar much more securely.

For a special Fender Japan FSR like this one, having a proper hard-shell case is a particularly nice addition and provides extra peace of mind whether the guitar is being stored at home, taken to gigs, or shipped to its next owner.

As with all Guitar Chimp listings, detailed photos are provided of the exact instrument—no stock photos.
