For Sale: 2009 Gibson Les Paul Double Cutaway P-90 – Goldtop | OHSC

Up for sale is a 2009 Gibson Les Paul Double Cutaway P-90 in Goldtop, complete with its original hard-shell case.

This is a very cool and somewhat under-the-radar Gibson model that combines classic Les Paul construction and P-90 tone with the comfort and upper-fret access of a double-cutaway body.

Featuring a mahogany body with carved maple top, ’60s SlimTaper mahogany neck, rosewood fingerboard, and dual P-90 soapbar pickups, this guitar delivers plenty of vintage Gibson character in a lighter and more player-friendly package.

At only 8 lbs 2 oz, it's also comfortably lightweight for a carved-top Gibson and feels noticeably more agile than many traditional single-cut Les Pauls.

Condition

Very Good – 8.5/10

This guitar shows honest cosmetic wear from normal use, including:

  • Light surface scratches
  • A few small dings
  • Finish checking in various areas
  • Finish checking on the back of the headstock
  • Clear-coat checking extending from the nut area
  • A small area near the checking was previously sanded in an apparent attempt to minimize its appearance, with the sanding reaching through the clear coat to the paint layer

Important Note Regarding the Headstock Finish Checking

We want to be especially clear about the finish checking visible near the nut and on the back of the headstock.

There is finish checking in the clear coat extending from the nut area. A portion of this area appears to have been sanded at some point, presumably in an attempt to remove or reduce the appearance of the checking.

Unfortunately, the sanding went through the clear coat and reached the underlying paint.

The exposed area also allows the finish layers to be seen more clearly and confirms that the checking is confined to the finish/clear coat and does not extend into the wood.

There is no crack, break, or structural damage to the neck or headstock.

This is strictly a cosmetic finish issue and does not affect the stability, playability, or functionality of the guitar.

Please review the detailed close-up photos carefully, as we have made every effort to clearly photograph this area under direct lighting.

Aside from the cosmetic wear described above, the guitar is structurally sound.

The neck is straight and stable, and the frets are in excellent condition with no visible wear.

The guitar has been professionally inspected and set up by our in-house luthier and plays cleanly across the entire fingerboard with comfortable action and no buzzing or dead spots.

Les Paul Double Cutaway Design

The Les Paul Double Cutaway takes several of the fundamental ingredients that make a traditional Les Paul so appealing and puts them into a more streamlined, accessible body design.

You still get the familiar Gibson combination of a mahogany body, carved maple top, set mahogany neck, rosewood fingerboard, 24.75" scale length, Tune-O-Matic bridge, and stopbar tailpiece.

What changes dramatically is the feel.

The symmetrical double cutaways provide much easier access to the highest frets, while the overall design feels lighter and more agile than a conventional single-cut Les Paul.

It's a great option for someone who loves Gibson tone but wants something a little less traditional and considerably less common.

Classic Goldtop Finish

Few Gibson finishes are as iconic as Goldtop.

The metallic gold maple top immediately connects the guitar to some of the earliest and most desirable Les Paul designs while providing a great contrast against the darker mahogany body and rosewood fingerboard.

Pairing the Goldtop finish with soapbar P-90s gives this guitar an especially strong vintage Gibson aesthetic.

The double-cutaway body then adds a completely different personality, making this an interesting combination of classic Gibson styling and a more modern player-oriented design.

Dual P-90 Soapbar Pickups

A huge part of this guitar's appeal is its pair of P-90 soapbar pickups.

P-90s occupy a sweet spot between traditional Fender-style single coils and Gibson humbuckers.

They retain the immediacy, clarity, and dynamic response of a single-coil pickup while delivering significantly more midrange authority and punch.

Played clean, they can sound warm, woody, and articulate.

Push an amplifier into overdrive and they become gritty, aggressive, and extremely responsive to picking dynamics.

The bridge pickup provides plenty of bite and attitude for rhythm work and leads, while the neck position offers a fuller, warmer voice without losing the characteristic P-90 definition.

It's an extremely versatile combination for classic rock, blues, indie, alternative, punk, garage rock, roots, and Americana.

Simple, Player-Friendly Electronics

Rather than the traditional Les Paul arrangement of four individual controls, this model uses a streamlined layout with:

  • 1 Master Volume
  • 1 Master Tone
  • 3-Way Pickup Selector

It's an exceptionally intuitive setup.

Both pickups can be controlled from a single volume and tone control, making quick adjustments on stage much easier and keeping the guitar focused on playing rather than constantly managing separate controls.

’60s SlimTaper Neck

The ’60s SlimTaper neck profile gives this guitar a fast, comfortable feel.

Our measurements on this particular example are:

  • Nut Width: 1.70"
  • 1st Fret Depth: .80"
  • 12th Fret Depth: .90"

At only .80" at the 1st fret, the neck feels noticeably slim and streamlined in the lower positions.

It gradually increases to .90" at the 12th fret, adding just enough substance as you move toward the upper register.

Combined with the 24.75" scale length, 12" fingerboard radius, rosewood board, and excellent upper-fret access provided by the double cutaways, this is an extremely comfortable Gibson to play.

Tone & Feel

This guitar has a lively, responsive feel that distinguishes it from a heavier traditional Les Paul.

At only 8 lbs 2 oz, it feels comfortable on a strap and nicely balanced, while the double-cutaway body makes movement into the upper register exceptionally easy.

Tonally, there's still plenty of Gibson character.

The mahogany body provides warmth and strong midrange, the carved maple top adds definition and attack, and the P-90s give the guitar a raw, immediate quality that responds beautifully to changes in picking dynamics.

Roll back the volume and you can get warm, articulate cleans.

Turn it up through an overdriven amp and the guitar becomes aggressive, harmonically rich, and full of character.

For players who like the fundamental ingredients of a Les Paul but want something lighter, faster, more accessible, and equipped with P-90s, this is a fantastic combination.

Original Hard-Shell Case

The guitar comes complete with its original hard-shell case.

The case provides excellent protection for storage, transportation, and shipping and makes this a nicely complete example.

The guitar will be professionally packed inside its hard-shell case for safe transport to its next owner.
