The guitar that was never supposed to exist. That's right! All of this information is alleged as Gibson will neither confirm nor deny the story and the guitar is not listed in their database. There have been a handful of these that have popped up and the story has been well documented on message boards and amongst collectors. The story goes that in 2005 Gibson wanted to do a signature guitar with Neil Young. Of course Neil Young said no and you would think that would be the end of it. Nope! Gibson tried to secretly release 20 VOS and 20, Tom Murphy, Aged versions of this guitar in Japan only. It's been said that they got to 6 of each when Neil found out and had his lawyers sent a cease-and-desist. This particular one is aged by Tom Murphy and is the more desired of the two. The COA does not say anything about Neil Young, but the checklist says "LP Neil Young". The few others I have seen are listed the same. I've heard that not all came with the metal pick-guard. This one does have the metal guard. It's not a perfect replica of "Old Black". In fact, there are quite a few differences. I'm shocked that Gibson "allegedly" did this, and I'm sure we'll never see anything like this again. If you have ever wanted one of these, this will likely be the only chance to get this. These just don't ever come up for sale.
The guitar itself is in excellent condition. It's a Tom Murphy relic so of course, it has lots of factory relic wear. The frets are in excellent condition with no wear and the guitar plays incredibly.
