For Sale: 1986 Fender MIJ Japan TN70-85 MAHO Thinline Telecaster – Mahogany w/ Tweed HSC
Up for sale is a 1986 Fender MIJ Japan TN70-85 MAHO Thinline Telecaster, complete with a non-original tweed hard-shell case.
This is a very cool and increasingly hard-to-find mid-’80s Fender Japan model built at the Fujigen factory. The TN70-85 MAHO is a ’70s-style Thinline Telecaster reissue featuring a semi-hollow mahogany body, which gives it a warmer, fuller, and more resonant voice than the more common ash or alder-bodied Thinlines. It is also impressively lightweight, making it a very appealing option for players who want classic Telecaster feel with a more open, woody response.
Condition
This guitar is in excellent condition and I would rate it a solid 9/10. It shows some small dings from normal use. Please review all photos carefully for the most accurate representation of condition.
There are no cracks, breaks, or repairs. The neck is straight, the frets are in excellent condition, and the guitar plays cleanly up and down the neck with no buzzing or dead spots. It has also been recently professionally set up and is ready to go.
The non-original tweed hard-shell case is included.

Electronics & Features
One of the biggest draws of the TN70-85 MAHO is the mahogany semi-hollow construction. That combination gives the guitar a richer and more resonant character than a standard solidbody Tele, while still keeping the familiar attack and clarity that make Telecasters so usable in so many settings.
These mid-’80s Fender Japan reissues are also well regarded for their build quality, and Fujigen-era instruments continue to be especially desirable among players and collectors. The lightweight body, vintage-style hardware, and classic Thinline design make this a standout example from that period.
Tone & Feel
This guitar has a lively, open response with more warmth and roundness than a typical solidbody Telecaster. The semi-hollow mahogany body adds air and resonance, while the single-coil pickups keep the sound clear, articulate, and unmistakably Fender.
The U-shaped neck feels comfortable and substantial without being bulky, and the 7.25" radius gives it a very traditional Fender feel. At just 6 lbs 4 oz, it is exceptionally lightweight and very comfortable for long playing sessions.
