For Sale: 2003 Gibson Thunderbird IV – Classic White | Ebony Fingerboard | All Original | OHSC
Up for sale is a 2003 Gibson Thunderbird IV in Classic White, complete with its original Gibson hard-shell case.
Few basses have the visual presence of a Gibson Thunderbird. With its unmistakable reverse-body design, long neck, and powerful dual-humbucker configuration, the Thunderbird has been a rock & roll staple for decades.
This early-2000s example is especially striking in Classic White, which pairs beautifully with the dark ebony fingerboard and black appointments. The bass remains all original and has developed plenty of honest cosmetic character while remaining structurally sound and an excellent player.
Condition
Very Good – 8/10
This bass has been played and shows honest cosmetic wear consistent with its age, including:
- Scratches and dings throughout
- Finish wear in various areas
- Finish checking
- Wear on the back
- General playwear consistent with a 20+ year-old instrument
The wear gives the Classic White finish a great naturally played-in appearance without affecting the performance of the instrument.
Please review all photos carefully for the most accurate representation of condition.
There are no cracks, breaks, repairs, or structural issues.
The neck is straight and stable, and the original frets are in excellent condition with virtually no wear. The bass has been professionally inspected and set up by our in-house luthier and plays cleanly up and down the fingerboard with no buzzing or dead spots.

All-Original Example
One of the highlights of this Thunderbird is that it remains all original.
The original pickups, electronics, hardware, and frets remain intact, making this a great example for someone looking for an early-2000s Gibson Thunderbird that hasn't been heavily modified over the years.
The original frets remain in excellent condition, and the bass has been professionally set up and is ready to play.
No paperwork is included with the bass.
Classic White Finish
The Classic White finish gives this Thunderbird a particularly striking appearance.
Thunderbirds already have one of the most recognizable silhouettes in the bass world, and the white finish emphasizes every line of the reverse-body design.
The scratches, dings, finish checking, and natural wear that have developed over the years give this bass plenty of genuine character. Rather than looking artificially aged, it has the honest appearance of an instrument that has actually been played.
Paired with the dark ebony fingerboard, it's a killer combination.
Ebony Fingerboard & Thin Neck
Another especially desirable feature of this 2003 Thunderbird is its ebony fingerboard.
The smooth, hard surface gives the bass a precise and responsive feel while complementing the aggressive character of the Thunderbird design.
The neck measures .82" at the 1st fret and .98" at the 12th fret, starting relatively slim and gradually filling out as you move toward the upper register.
Combined with the narrow 1.50" nut width, the neck has a fast, comfortable feel that will be immediately familiar to Thunderbird players.
Tone & Feel
There is nothing subtle about the sound of a great Thunderbird.
The original Gibson humbuckers deliver a big, muscular low end, aggressive midrange, and plenty of growl, allowing the bass to occupy its own space in a dense rock mix.
Dig in with a pick and it delivers the authoritative attack and grind that Thunderbirds are famous for. Played with the fingers, it offers a thick, warm fundamental with plenty of definition.
At 8 lbs 14 oz, this example is also a very manageable weight for a full-size Gibson bass.
Most importantly, it plays and sounds fantastic.
Original Gibson Hard-Shell Case
The bass comes complete with its original Gibson hard-shell case.
The case is in very good condition and remains fully functional, providing excellent protection for storage, transportation, and shipping.
No original paperwork is included.
