For Sale: 2014 Fender Japan Kurt Cobain Mustang Left-Handed – Sonic Blue w/ HSC

Up for sale is a very rare 2014 Fender Made in Japan Kurt Cobain Mustang Left-Handed in the iconic Sonic Blue finish, complete with a non-original hard-shell case.

The Kurt Cobain Mustang has become one of Fender's most recognizable modern artist models, recreating the heavily modified Mustangs Kurt played during Nirvana's later years. With its short 24" scale, vintage 7.25" radius, Seymour Duncan JB bridge humbucker, traditional Mustang neck pickup, Adjusto-Matic bridge, and Dynamic Vibrato, it combines classic Fender offset feel with a much more powerful rock-oriented voice.

What makes this example particularly special is the factory left-handed configuration. Left-handed versions are considerably harder to find than their right-handed counterparts, and paired with the classic Sonic Blue finish, this is an especially desirable variation.

Originality & Tremolo Arm

With the exception of the tremolo arm, everything on the guitar is original.

The current tremolo arm began as a right-handed arm and was bent into the proper position for left-handed use. It fits and functions very well with the guitar's Dynamic Vibrato system.

Kurt Cobain Mustang Features

The Kurt Cobain Mustang was inspired by the modified Fender Mustangs Kurt used during Nirvana's later years, most notably around the In Utero era.

Rather than simply reproducing a stock vintage Mustang, Fender incorporated several of the modifications that helped make Kurt's guitars so distinctive.

The most important is the Seymour Duncan JB humbucker in the bridge position. The JB provides substantially more output, midrange punch, and sustain than a traditional Mustang single-coil, transforming the short-scale Mustang into a surprisingly powerful rock guitar.

The original Fender Mustang single-coil remains in the neck position, providing a brighter, cleaner contrast to the hotter bridge humbucker.

The Adjusto-Matic bridge is another important feature, providing a more substantial and stable platform while retaining the traditional Mustang Dynamic Vibrato system.

The result is a guitar that still feels unmistakably like a Mustang but has considerably more power and versatility than a traditional vintage-spec example.

Tone & Feel

The combination of a short 24" scale, 7.25" fingerboard radius, and comfortable C-shaped neck gives this guitar the slinky, effortless feel that has made Mustangs favorites among generations of players.

The Seymour Duncan JB bridge humbucker is thick, aggressive, and harmonically rich, with enough output to push an amplifier hard while retaining excellent clarity. It's particularly well suited to distortion, fuzz, alternative rock, punk, and heavier styles.

Switch to the Mustang neck pickup and the guitar takes on a more traditional Fender character with additional clarity, chime, and definition.

The contrast between the two pickups gives this Mustang considerably more tonal range than its simple appearance might suggest.

At 7 lbs 14 oz, it feels substantial without being cumbersome and balances nicely while sitting or standing.
